Today, organizations are faced with meeting multiple internal and external integration demands. Meaningful Use Stage 2 has brought a whole new set of requirements for healthcare facilities.
Each initiative and supporting requirement adds another degree of complexity to your interoperability environment. One specific layer of integration is CCD data exchange to support your patient’s transition of care. This data exchange brings additional questions ranging from how to push CCD data, the ability to query and consume CCD documents, as well as how to effectively communicate with other entities via direct messaging protocols.
The ONC recently listed 3 options available for Transition of Care certification:
1. “Native” capabilities all within the same EHR technology solution
2. EHR technology + HIE/HISP combination
3. HIE/HISP stand alone
Ideally, a HISP solution would plug into your current system, and allow you to expand and initiate your connections with all third parties. HISP’s have the ability to securely automate lab result deliveries, admit/discharge notifications and exchange the summary of care records with Ambulatory and Primary Care Providers. Integrating direct messaging and HISP capabilities with your current EHR is the simplest solution to successfully achieve Meaningful Use Stage 2 Transition of Care requirements.
